Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (CAN) is one of southern China's biggest hubs, about 30 km from the city center. The metro, taxis and buses all connect cleanly to the city. Here's the no-Chinese-needed plan.
The airport has its own metro station (Airport South, 机场南). Take Line 3 toward Tiyu Xilu or Yantang. Line 3 branches at Tiyu Xilu - listen for the announcement and follow the bilingual signs. It takes about 45 minutes to the center and costs around 8 yuan. English signs and voice announcements are standard.
Several airport express bus lines run from the arrivals level to different parts of the city (Tianhe, Yuexiu, Zhujiang New Town). They cost 16-25 yuan and take 50-70 minutes depending on traffic. The ticket counters are just outside the arrivals hall and accept Alipay, WeChat Pay and cash.
A taxi from CAN to the city center costs about 100-150 yuan. Use the official taxi queue outside the terminal, or book a Didi with the English interface for an upfront fare. Have your hotel address in Chinese on your phone screen.
Guangzhou's old city around Xiguan and Shamian is full of narrow lanes where the map app gets confused. Save an imhere route from your metro or bus stop: photo-by-photo steps past the arcade buildings (qilou), teahouses and lane entrances take you straight to the hotel door.
